- Tasting Notes
Producer Craigie Knowe
Region Tasmania, Cranbrook
Variety 100% Riesling
Size 750 ml
Pairing pork, shellfish, poultry, appetizers and snacks, cured meat
The grapes are handpicked, then fermented at cool temperatures to extract the full flavour of this noble varietal. The result is a refreshingly crisp and dry wine. An appearance of brilliant pale silver straw aromas of lifted florals with subtle passionfruit and citrus. The palate is fresh red apple with fruit sweetness perfectly balanced by lime zest acidity. Wonderful to share with friends now or potential for cellaring 10-15 years to give you a journey of changing flavours over
time. Silver Medal Canberra International Riesling Challenge 2019.
Craigie Knowe is the oldest vineyard on the East Coast of Tasmania. Their first vines were planted in 1979, by then Hobart dentist John Austwick. He was such a pioneer of the time, with many local farmers thinking he was crazy, but they quickly realised John was onto something and planted their own vines.
A passionate Bordeaux Blend Cabernet fan, John initially planted Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot and Petite Verdot, but Pinot Noir and Riesling soon followed. He made his wine on-site in what is now the Cellar Door, and built an excellent reputation as an exceptional cool climate winemaker.
The Estate still grow the original varieties John planted, and in 2017 took on a long term lease of a small vineyard less than 2 km away. At the Glen Heriot site, we grow Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and more Pinot Noir (to create our white Label Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir Rose).
The estate philosophy is to grow exceptional fruit so the winemaker can weave his magic with minimal intervention.
